LONG ISLAND, New York - The University of Connecticut women's swimming and diving team positioned themselves to compete for a BIG EAST Championship, following a very successful day three.
The 400 IM kicked off the night, and sophomore Niamh Hofland started strong for the Huskies medaling and placing fourth with a time of 4:18.07 dropping four seconds from her preliminary time. The Huskies would continue to wrack up points as junior Charlotte Proceller, senior Linnea Anderson, and senior Grace Ali placed fourth, fifth, and sixth in the 100-yard Butterfly, giving UConn a total of 75 points between the three.
UConn wouldn't stop as senior Katelyn Walsh and sophomore Angela Gambardella would take home first and second place in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 1:02.14 and 1:02.91 respectively. One of the major highlights of the night for the Huskies came during the women's 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Kayla Mendonca was in a position to medal following the prelims, but that didn't end there. Not only did Mendonca take home first place, she also is now the school record holder in that event with a time of 54.87. Senior Catherine Fazio and freshman Margaret Donlevy would also make a huge impact as they would place third and fifth once again helping the Huskies.
While the swimmers were doing their part, the divers had a chance to build off their impressive first day. In what turned out to be the most impactful event of day three finals for UConn, freshman Julia Pioso, sophomore Analaura Faoro, and sophomore Elisabeth Katz swept the field in the women's 1- meter diving, giving UConn a total of 87 points from the one event.
To wrap up finals, the relay team of sophomore Kayla Mendonca, senior Katelyn Walsh, junior Charlotte Proceller, and freshman Maggie Donlevy would place second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:42.14. With the amazing day by the Huskies, they have positioned themselves to compete for a Big East Championship. UConn currently sits in second place heading into the final day of Championships, only 48 points behind Villanova.
