CHICAGO, Ill. – The UConn Huskies built a big lead on Friday and carried that momentum right into Saturday as they captured the team title at the 2022 BIG EAST Indoor Championship Presented by JEEP at the Gately Track & Field Center.
UConn piled up 179 points to win the program's third BIG EAST Indoor title. The Huskies finished 62.5 points in front of runner-up Villanova in the nine team field. DePaul took third (84 pts) followed by St. John's in fourth (75 pts), Georgetown in fifth (66 pts), Butler in sixth (61 pts), Marquette in seventh (58.5 pts), Providence in eighth (54 pts) and Xavier in ninth (6 pts).
"This meet and weekend was all about momentum for us," commented Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "Right from the start today, we just went out and took it. The triple jump set the tone right out of the gate."
"Since we combined the two programs back in 2019, we have been working toward this and today we did it," said Roy. "Everyone on this roster pulled together and today, a lot of individuals learned how to win and this team learned how to win. We got it done today."
UConn won the most individual titles with seven gold medals and 12 medals overall over the two-day championship meet. The Huskies list of gold medalists included Randi Burr (5,000m), Patricia Mroczkowski (High Jump), Emma Chee (Pole Vault), Taylor Woods (Long Jump), Felica Quainoo (Triple Jump), Mikyla Rodgers (Weight Throw) and Emily Lavarnway (Pentathlon).
"We really came together today. This was a huge step for this team and a signature win for this program."
The UConn coaching staff was also named the unanimous BIG EAST Women's Coaching Staff of the Year.
