STORRS, Conn. – Tristen Newton, a 6-5 guard who earned all-conference status while playing at East Carolina University last season, will continue his college basketball career at UConn, beginning with the 2022-23 season.
Newton, originally from El Paso, Texas, will enter UConn as a senior and will have one season of eligibility remaining, plus the option of a second season due to the NCAA granting an extra year for those players who were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-21.
Newton was a Second Team All-American Athletic Conference selection after leading East Carolina in scoring (17.7) and assists (5.0), while grabbing 4.8 rebounds, shooting .435 overall, .333 from three-point range, and playing 34.7 minutes per game. He led the entire AAC in free throw percentage at .879.
Newton, whose older brother Jawaun was a starting senior guard at the University of Evansville last season, had eight 20 point-plus games in 2021-22, including a season-high 32 points against Tulane and a 30-point output against Western Carolina.
After visiting UConn last weekend, Newton made his decision and ended his recruiting process. His transfer to UConn became official on Wednesday.
In his three seasons at East Carolina, Newton appeared in 78 games, starting 65, and scored 1,018 points, grabbed 356 rebounds and handed out 337 assists.
As four-year letterman at Burges High School in El Paso, Newton scored 3,266 points, grabbed 853 rebounds, handed out 472 assists, and had 334 steals.
