STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team lost their fiinal home match of the season, losing to Massachusetts, 4-0, in clinch format Wednesday afternoon at the UConn Tennis Courts on Campus.
"We came up against a tough UMass team today," said Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall.. "The doubles point was tightly contested, and it came down to the wire. JulieAnne and Leonie led the way with a nice win at number one. Aleksandra and Isabel battled from behind to force a tiebreaker, but came up a few points short. At #3, Caroline and Denise had a back and forth match, losing a close set 7-5. In singles, we played to clinch today. We lost at number #2, 4, and 6 in some tough match ups. JulieAnne was a set up and winning in the second when the match was called. Leonie was winning the second set, and Isabel was working her way back as well when the match was clinched. So, it really was a very close match overall. We need to finish our regular season strong on Friday when we travel to play URI, and I'm looking forward to see us respond positively."
The Huskies got a doubles win at No. 1 as senior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) beat Danielle Hack and Thamonpan Jonglertrakul, 6-3, their 13th win together this season. The Huskies battled at No. 2 and 3 but fell short of the doubles point. At No. 3, Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) and Doga Selen Takunyaci (Istanbul, Turkey) lost 7-5 to Dylan Cannon and Mariya Krasakova and the Minutewomen then clinced the point at No. 2 with Renata Farima and Anna Napadiy beating Aleksandra Karamyshev (Ashton, Md.) and Isabel Petri Bere (Lund, Sweden) 7-6 (5) in a tie-breaker.
The Minutewomen got the win with singles wins at No. 2, 4 and 6.
The Huskies wrap the regular season on Friday at Rhode Island before next week's BIG EAST Championship.
