OVERPECK, N.J. - The UConn women's rowing team started its first of two races this weekend, contending at the NYRA Invitational Saturday at Overpeck Lake.
The 1V8 beat out Saint Joseph's for second place by just over two-tenths of a second (06:57.588) to start the slate of races. The 1V4 also had a wire-to-wire finish, ticking in just under a second (08:15.084) ahead of Marist for another second-place finish.
"It was really great racing today against some really competitive teams," stated head coach Jennifer Sanford. "The varsity 8 showed some great fight in the morning heat to sprint through St.Joe's in the final strokes of the race. The varsity four had a similar victory in their second race, this time against Marist, and managed to finish less than a second ahead of them. In close races like that it's very fun to come out on the winning side of that stroke for stroke fight. It was disappointing for the third varsity 8 in the morning to have equipment issues that caused them to not be able to finish, but they came back strong and had a solid piece in the second round of racing. Overall, I'm pleased with the effort our team put out today."
UConn will close out the weekend in Worcester tomorrow as it contends against Holy Cross and Boston College.
