Five Huskies named to BIG EAST first and second team

NEW YORK – Sami Barnett, Briana Marcelino, and Elise Sokolsky were named to the All-BIG EAST First Team on Wednesday afternoon. Reese Guevarra and Lexi Hastings received All-BIG EAST Second Team honors while UConn's staff won Coaching Staff of the Year.
Barnett and Marcelino have been a steady presence in the Huskies lineup all season. On the year, they both hold a batting average above .300, with over 30 runs scored, and 20 runs batted in. They are two of four Huskies to have started in all 52 games so far this year. Elise Sokolsky has been nothing short of dominant in her freshman campaign so far. With a 19-5 record on the season, she has a 2.54 era, with 167 strikeouts which ranks second in the BIG EAST. She was a unanimous first team selection.
Guevarra and Hastings have been reliable all season at the top of the Huskies lineup. The two corner outfielders have combined for 68 runs, 57 stolen bases, and 58 runs batted in this season. They each have surpassed the single season stolen base record, which was previously 25. They will look to continue their stellar seasons into the postseason this week.
Head Coach Laura Valentino and her staff were named as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. In Valentino's third season as head coach, the Huskies won the BIG EAST Regular Season for the first time since 1997, having won over 30 games for the first time since 2001. UConn has broken numerous program single season records this year including team stolen bases, walks, strikeouts, and runs batted in.
