STORRS, Conn. – Hassan Diarra, a 6-2 guard who has played the last two seasons at Texas A&M, has decided to transfer to UConn and will join the men's basketball program for the 2022-23 season.
Diarra will enter UConn as a junior and have two years of eligibility remaining, with the option of a third, due to the extra season the NCAA has allowed student-athletes affected by the pandemic.
Diarra, a native of Queens, N.Y., becomes the third student-athlete to join the Huskies via the transfer portal since the end of the 2021-22 season. Tristen Newton transferred to UConn from East Carolina and Nahiem Alleyne came to the Huskies from Virginia Tech.
Diarra was a solid contributor to the 2021-22 Texas A&M team which went 27-13 and reached the championship game of the NIT. Diarra appeared in all 40 games for the Aggies, averaging 6.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists, while shooting .370 overall, .324 from three-point range, and .718 from the foul line.
As a freshman in 2020-21, Diarra appeared in all 18 of the Aggies' games, averaging 5.8, points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists.
Before going to Texas A&M, Diarra spent three years in Connecticut, prepping for three years at Putnam Science Academy, leading the team to national championships in 2018-19 and 2019-20. He left as Putnam Science's all-time leading scorer with 1,469 career points and was a consensus top 75 recruit.
Diarra, who visited UConn with his family earlier this week, is the younger brother of Mamadou Diarra, who has been a graduate assistant on UConn Coach Dan Hurley's staff for the past two years after his UConn playing career was prematurely curtailed by a chronic knee condition.
