Huskies Capture BIG EAST Championship

BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP - FINAL RESULTSÂ Â FRIDAY RECAP
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's track and field team made it a sweep of this year's BIG EAST Track & Field indoor and outdoor titles, winning their first BIG EAST Outdoor Championship since the 1995 season on their home track at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs.
The Huskies won the 2022 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship presented by JEEP with a total of 209 points while winning four events and taking home 20 total medals over the two day championship event. UConn finished in front of Villanova in second place (156), Georgetown in third (112), St. John's in fourth (108), Marquette in fifth (80), Providence in sixth (68), DePaul in seventh (64), Butler in eighth (43) and Xavier in ninth (17).

"I think the women saw it and the turning point was last night with Mia," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "No question about it, you just felt it. the rest of the team just followed that lead. Showed up today and got right at it, chipped away each event. So many championship performances today got it done. I can't say enough about it. So much fun."
Winning gold on Saturday was freshman Gabby Davis (Franklin Park,NJ) who won the 400 meter hurdles. On Friday, senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) won the 3,000 meter steeplechase, junior Mikyla Rodgers (South Huntington, NY) won the hammer throw, and junior Emma Chee (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) won the pole vault.
The Huskies capture their third BIG EAST Outdoor Championship (2022, 1995, 1986) and their sixth overall BIG EAST title. The UConn men also captured the BIG EAST title, marking the first time in program history the men's and women's teams won the conference title in the BIG EAST outdoor championship in the same season.
On the track…
- Husky freshman Gabby Davis (Franklin Park, NJ) took home the gold in the 400 meter hurdles on Saturday, topping the field with a time of 1:00.26 to win her first career championship medal. Classmate Alyssa Elliott (Bangor, Maine) picked up points with a seventh place finish in 1:04.86.
- Freshman Jailya Ash (Voorhees, NJ) won silver in the 100 meter hurdles, clocking a time of 13.58 seconds, setting a new PR. UConn also picked up points from a fourth place finish from sophomore Felicia Quainoo (Metuchen, NJ), 14.20, and freshman A'Liyah Thomas (Linden, NJ), 14.79 setting a new PR.
- Freshman Brianna Davis (Bay Shore, NY) won the silver in the 100 meter dash, posting a time of 11.87 seconds, earning a medal in the event for the second-straight year. Danielle Phillip (Valley Stream, NY) earned points with a fifth-place clocking at 12.14 seconds. Davis came back and won the bronze in the 200 meters, taking third at 24.19 seconds.
- Davis would earn a third medal on Saturday as part of the Huskies 4x100 meter relay team. She was joined by Phillip, Ash and Amanda Ruffin (Ellicott City, Md.) to earn silver with a time of 45.96 seconds, the fastest time by a UConn team this season.
- UConn also grabbed a silver in the 4x400 meter relay as the team of Ta'Jae Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill.), Jalah Cooper (Windsor, Conn.), Sophia Castronovo (Emerson, NJ) and Raquel Rosa (Waterbury, Conn.) clocked in at 3:45.00, a top time for the Huskies this spring.
- The UConn 4x800 meter relay team of Allie Alsup (Durham, Conn.), Emma Krebs (Roxbury, Conn.), Madison Relyea and Elise O'Leary (Milton, Mass.) took the bronze with a time of 8:53.18, the top time from the Huskies this season.
- After her win in the 3000 meter steeplechase on Friday night, senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) came back on Saturday and scored for the Huskies in the 1500 meters, finishing fourth with a time of 4:26.24.
In the field…
- Junior Emily Lavarnway (Ovid, NY) finished with the silver medal in the heptathlon, totaling a new career best 5,395 points over the seven events. Lavarnway didn't finish lower than third in any event and won the 200-meter dash on Friday (25.11) and the 800 meters on Saturday (2:16.61).
- UConn took silver and bronze in the discus throw. Freshman Emily Alty (Asburn, Ontario) earned her first career championship medal by taking second with a throw of 45.62 meters. In third was sophomore Susie Okoli (New Haven, Conn.) who had a throw of 42.16 meters to set a new PR. Okoli also scored for the Huskies in the shot put with a fourth-place finish and also posted a new PR at 13.59 meters.
- The Huskies also took silver and bronze in the triple jump where sophomore Jasime Barrow (Athens, Ga.) was second with a leap of 12.37 meters and Quainoo was third with a jump of 12.12 meters.
- In the high jump, junior Patricia Mroczkowski (Berlin, Conn.) won the silver and did so setting a new PR at 1.86 meters. Mroczkowski and Villanova's Sanaa Barnes both cleared that height, and it went to a jump off to determine the top spot with Barnes taking it. UConn also got points from sophomore Taylor Pannell (Middletown, NY) who was fifth at a height of 1.69 meters and senior Kelly Ward (Oxford, Conn.) in seventh at 1.69 meters
