LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. – UConn golfer Trevor Lopez tied for second place and his UConn teammate Vikram Konanki recorded his first-ever hole-in-one as the Husky freshmen duo competed in the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship, which was completed on Wednesday.
Formerly known as the PGA Minority Golf Championship, the PWCC is in its 35th year and features more then 30 teams representing Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving institutions and other minority-serving institutions, as well as minority players from across the nation. The field of 202 participants are divided into five categories – Division I Men's Teams, Division II Men's Teams, Women's Teams, Individual Men and Individual Women.
Lopez (Winchester, Mass.) and Konanki (Newton, Mass.) competed in the Individual Men's tournament, a 54-hole event over three days, played on two courses, the Par 72, Liberty Hall course in Lafayette Hill, Pa., and the Par 70, Torresdale in Philadelphia.
Lopez fired a 2-under 70 at Liberty Hill on the final round on Wednesday, giving him a three-day aggregate 5-over, 75-74-70=219, with a total of nine birdies to finish second in the 30-player field. Sahasawat Ariyachatvakin, a freshman at the University of Delaware, won the event with a 3-under, 211, while Ali Khan, a sophomore at Ball State, tied for second with Lopez with a 5-over, 73-73-73=219.
Konanki finished in a tie for 19th place with a 24-over, 80-83-75=238, but had arguably the highlight of the tournament in the final round on Wednesday, when he teed off with a 6-iron on the 185-yard 14th hole and found the bottom of the cup for the first ace of his career.
Former UConn captain Nabeel Khan was a two-time champion of the event, winning the Men's Independent in both 2017 and 2018.
