PARAMUS, N.J. – UConn's Jared Nelson shot an even-par 70 on Tuesday to complete two days of stroke play at the 122nd U.S. Amateur Championship with a 4-over, 75-70=145, advancing to the championship's match play knockout rounds.
Out of the 312 golfers who qualified for the finals out of the 7,749 entries from across the country, just 64 advance to stroke play, which begins Wednesday at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J. The U.S. Amateur champion will have to win six straight stroke play matches to capture the title.
Nelson (Rutland, Vt.), who will return to UConn and play as a graduate student in 2022-23, shot a 4-over 75 Monday at Ridgewood Country Club and followed it up with an even-par 70 at Arcola Country Club on Tuesday to earn a tie for 39th place with 14 other players. With 15 more players tied for 54th place at 5-over 146, there first will be a playoff Wednesday morning for the last 11 spots to reduce the field to 64. Then match play will begin.
The U.S. Amateur champion also earns an exemption into the 2023 U.S. Open at The Los Angeles Country Club, along with a spot in The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and a likely invitation to the Masters in April.
Nelson qualified for U.S. Amateur by winning the U.S. Amateur Qualifying Tournament on June 30 at Connecticut National Golf Club in Putnam. That was part of the outstanding summer of success that Nelson has put together, winning the Hornblower Memorial in Plymouth, Mass., the Vermont Amateur Championship, and the 93rd New England Amateur Championship in Cranston, R.I.
Nelson was UConn's second-leading scorer during the 2021-22 season, averaging 72.61 per round, with three Top 10 and five Top 20 finishes. He posted 13 rounds of par-or-better and shot a season-low round of 67 on three different occasions.
