BROOKLINE, Mass. – The UConn women's soccer team (2-2-1) dropped a cruel result, 1-0, to Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at Parsons Field.
The Huskies from Storrs, outshot Northeastern 21-3, had a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks and dominated possession for the majority of the second half but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Northeastern keeper, Stam Holland, made nine saves including a couple spectacular stops to keep UConn from getting on the scoreboard.
Reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Maddie Carroll had the first great opportunity for the Huskies at the tail end of the first half. With 5:28 remaining, Cara Elemendorf played a beautiful cross that found Carroll just outside the six. Carroll headed the delivery but Holland was in the right spot to knock it away.
UConn did its best work in the second half, recording 16 shots in the half and dominating the possession.
With 19:29 left in regulation, the Huskies earned one of their seven corner kicks in the second half. Senior Cara Long sent her corner inside the box that found Sophie McCarthy. The Walpole, Mass. native headed it down towards the goal line but Holland's leg got in the way to keep the game tied, 0-0.
Jada Konte created the next best chance for the Huskies with just over 10 minutes to play in the game. The Woodbridge, Va. native worked her way around a defender, created space and teed up a missile that Holland was able to parry over the bar.
Northeastern finally broke through with under three minutes in the game to break the stalemate.
Next up, the Huskies head back on the road next Sunday, September 11 at 1 p.m. against Central Connecticut State.
