Women's T&F Win 2023 Indoor Big East Championships for Second Straight Year

2023 Indoor Big East Championships Final Results
CHICAGO – The University of Connecticut women's track and field team won the 2023 Indoor Big East Championships trophy for another year at the two-day event this weekend.
UConn finished with a total team score of 169 points scored over 18 events. In second, Depaul scored 111 points and in third Georgetown finished with 99 points. This is UConn's second consecutive Big East Championship.
For the women, there were six individual champions including four medal event winners. Emily Lavarnway won gold in the Indoor Pentathlon with 4,036 points. Weight thrower Natalia Surdej, took silver with a throw of 18.34m.
Kalli Knott won gold in the Indoor Pole Vault with a jump of 3.85m and Sofia Wittmann took bronze with a 3.50m jump. In the Long Jump, UConn took 1,2, and 3. A'liyah Thomas won gold jumping a personal best of 6.28m and was two millimeters shy of the Gately Facility at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center record. However, that mark is first in the Big East this season and 27th in the nation. Taylor Woods took silver jumping 6.02m and Jasmine Barrow finished with bronze also jumping for a personal best of 5.94m.
In the Triple Jump, Barrow won gold setting a personal best of 12.61m earning her second medal. Jailya Ash won gold in the 60m Hurdles running a time of 8.35 seconds. Patricia Mroczkowski also won gold in the High Jump with a 1.76m jump. Then, in the 4X400 Meter Relay, Jessica Starr, Emily Lavarnway, Jalah Cooper, and Raquel Rosa finished with a gold medal and ran a season best of 3:44.02.
"We had a great team effort," Director of Track & Field Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "We had 12 individual champions on the men's and women's side. A'liyah Thomas also won Women's Most Outstanding Performer in Field Events. Our coaches won Men's and Women's Coaching Staff of the Year also. We had a very successful weekend."
