MANCHESTER, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team won 6-1 at their home indoor courts at Magic Lincer Tennis Club against Merrimack Saturday night.
UConn would start off strong in doubles play earning the doubles point from the first doubles pair and second doubles pair. Isabel Petri Bere and Aleksandra Karamyshev at second doubles would end first cruising to a 6-0 victory. Then, first doubles pair, Olivia Wright and Maria Constantinou, would close doubles out with the winning doubles point by a 6-4 score.
The active play from doubles would carry over into singles as third and fourth singles would get an additional two points for the Huskies. Karamyshev would get to 5-1 in the first set at third singles when Merrimack's Nikala Tuffanelli would retire. Petri Bere would ease her way to a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles.
With UConn up 3-0, first-year Cameron Didion would clinch the match at 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 score. Soon after, Constantinou and Cook would add the two extra singles points to help UConn secure a 6-0 match score. Wright would fight in a ten-point tiebreak after splitting sets taking the first set 6-3, but then falling short in the second set at 6-2 and then 10-6 in the tiebreak.
"I am pleased with our doubles play today," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. "We had nice wins at number 1 and number 2 to secure the doubles point. That carried over into the singles matches where we got off to great starts on all courts. Isabel really led the way today in singles and doubles with great effort and results."
