MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Led by Top 10 finishes by grad student Jared Nelson and junior Jimmy Paradise, the UConn men's golf team captured second-place at the Bash at the Beach tournament, which finished Tuesday at The Surf, Golf and Beach Club at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The runner-up spot is UConn's highest finish of the season in a stroke-play event. The Huskies did win the BIG EAST Match Play event on Feb. 8. At Bash at the Beach, UConn shot an aggregate 3-under 279-288-282=849, second only to Oral Roberts' 9-under 843 in the large 18-team field.
Nelson (Rutland, Vt.), UConn's leading scorer, fired a 7-under, 68-71-67=206, finishing just one stroke behind individual champion Caden Weber of Utah Valley in the 108-player field. It is the fourth time this season that Nelson has finished in the top two and the tourney upped his total of par-or-better rounds to 15 this season and his 51 in his career. It marks his 17th career Top 10 finish.
Paradise (Tampa, Fla.), had his best finish of the season with a 4-under, 69-71-69=209, to end in a tie for sixth place. It is Paradise's first Top 10 finish of the season and the third of his career. The three rounds of par-or-better hiked his career total to 22.
Also aiding the UConn cause was sophomore Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.), who tied for 25th with a 3-over, 70-74-72=216, junior Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.), who tied for 31st place with a 5-over, 72-72-74=218, and sophomore Eric Boulger tied for 63rd place with a 12-over, 73-76-76=225.
Playing as individuals were UConn freshman Colin Spencer (Mashpee, Mass.), who shot 72-72-79=225, freshman Connor Goode (Glastonbury, Conn.) who shot 76-74-80=230, and sophomore Vikram Konanki (Newton, Mass.), who shot 78-77-80=235.
