NEW YORK – Five members of the UConn women's basketball team earned BIG EAST regular season honors, headlined by 2022-23 Most Improved Player Aaliyah Edwards and repeating BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Nika Mühl. The league announced end-of-season honors Thursday.
Edwards and graduate student Lou Lopez Sénéchal were unanimously named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Mühl and graduate student Dorka Juhász were tabbed to the Second Team and redshirt junior Aubrey Griffin earned Honorable Mention honors.
Edwards has stepped up big for the Huskies this season, bringing her scoring average from 7.9 points per game in 2021-22 to 16.3 this season. She's also moved her rebounding from 5.1 per game to 8.8. Edwards has had 11 double-doubles this season and is one of just two Huskies to appear in each game this season. She ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in scoring and fourth in rebounding. She is the third Husky to be named Most Improved Player.
Mühl is the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, becoming just the fifth player in league history to earn the recognition multiple times. She anchored UConn's defense, which limited BIG EAST opponents to a league-best 54.2 points per game. Mühl is constantly tasked with guarding the opponents' top guard. She leads the Huskies with 40 steals on the year. Mühl ranks second nationally with 7.9 assists per game and now holds the UConn single-season record with 236. She also has career highs this year with 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.
Lopez Sénéchal has been UConn's most consistent scorer this season, averaging 15.9 points per game. She has scored double digits in 28 games this season, including nine games with 20-plus points. Lopez Sénéchal is one of two Huskies to play in each game this season. She's shooting 43.2 percent from three-point range, which ranks 13th nationally.
Juhász has been a force for UConn in the post this season, averaging 14.3 points and a team-high 10.0 rebounds per game. She has 11 double-doubles this year and has grabbed double-digit rebounds in 12 games this season.
Griffin returned after missing 2021-22 with an injury and has become a major role player for the Huskies. She is averaging career highs with 12.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Griffin has notched four double-doubles this season and has scored in double digits in 20 games.
The Huskies won the 2022-23 BIG EAST regular season title and are the No. 1 seed in this weekend's BIG EAST Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. UConn will face either Butler or Georgetown in the tournament quarterfinals on Saturday at noon on FS1.
