Top-Seeded Huskies, Marquette to Meet in BIG EAST Semifinals

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – The top-seeded and ninth-ranked UConn women's basketball team (27-5 18-2 BIG EAST) faces No. 5-seed Marquette (21-9, 13-7) in the 2023 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament semifinals against No. 5-seed Marquette on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Mohegan Sun Arena.
Sophomore Azzi Fudd played her first game since Jan. 15 as UConn beat Georgetown, 69-39, in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals Saturday. Junior Aaliyah Edwards led the game with 19 points and 13 rebounds while adding four blocks and two steals. Fudd had 10 points and four assists in 16 minutes off the bench. UConn held Georgetown to 12 first-half points, a season low for a UConn opponent. The Huskies outrebounded the Hoyas 58-38.
The Huskies are 95-13 (.880) all-time in conference tournaments. The Huskies have won 27 total conference tournament titles: 20 in the BIG EAST and seven in the American Athletic Conference. UConn has been in the championship game of every conference tournament since 1993.
No. 5-seed Marquette beat No. 4-seed St. John's, 57-47, to advance. Chloe Marotta led Marquette with 18 points. This season, Jordan King leads Marquette with 16.3 points per game. King and Marotta were named All-BIG EAST First Team while Emily La Chapelle and Mackenzie Hare were named to the All-Freshman Team. Head coach Megan Duffy is in her fourth season at Marquette.
UConn is 16-1 all-time vs. Marquette. The Huskies' only loss in the series came in the teams' last meeting, a 59-52 decision on Feb. 8.
Five Huskies earned BIG EAST regular season honors, headlined by 2022-23 Most Improved Player Aaliyah Edwards and repeating BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Nika Mühl. Edwards and graduate student Lou Lopez Sénéchal were unanimously named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Mühl and graduate student Dorka Juhász were tabbed to the Second Team and redshirt junior Aubrey Griffin earned Honorable Mention honors.
