No. 9 HookC Comes Up Short on BIG EAST Championship Saturday

MASON, Ohio - The No. 9 UConn baseball team (43-15) came up just short against the Xavier Musketeers on BIG EAST Championship Saturday en route to the Huskies third-straight BIG EAST Tournament title.
Needing to win two games on Saturday against the Musketeers, the Huskies took care of business in game one with a 6-4 victory and force a winner-take-all game seven.Â
UConn led 3-2 heading to the ninth inning of game two but the Musketeers scored five runs in the ninth to claim the 2023 BIG EAST Championship.Â
The Huskies will await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, May 29 at noon on ESPN2. UConn is expected to receive an at-large bid and reach its fifth-straight NCAA Tournament.Â
Game One Highlights
- David Smith recorded a four-hit game that included a pair of runs scored, two stolen bases and drove in a run.
- Tommy Ellisen made the start and tied his career-high with 4.1 innings. The RHP allowed one earned run, walked zero and struck out a career-high five.Â
- Zach Fogell earned his team-leading eighth victory of the year with 3.1 innings of one run ball.
- Justin Willis recorded his 27th career save with by locking down the final five outs of the ballgame. Leading 6-3 in the eighth the right-hander got a double play ball with the bases loaded to keep the Huskies ahead.Â
- Ben Huber hit his team-leading 16th home run of the year in the seventh.
- Head coach JIm Penders notched his 699th career victory.
Game Two Highlights
- Garrett Coe pitched a career-high 5.2 innings with just one run allowed, did not walk a batter and struck out four. The lefty earned All-Tournament accolades.Â
- David Smith recorded his fourth multi-hit game of the tournament and finished the Championship with 11 hits earning All-Tournament team honors
- Matt Garbowski is riding a season-high seven game hit streak.
- Jake Studley hit his eighth home run of the season and first since May 7th vs. Seton Hall.
- The loss was the first time this season UConn lost when leading after eight (34-1).Â
- Ben Huber and Paul Tammaro also landed on the BIG EAST All-Tournament team.Â
