UConn Kicks off 2023 Season at Classic City Clash

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team kicks off the 2023 season with a three-match invitational at the Classic City Clash on Friday, Aug. 25 through Sunday, Aug. 27 facing University of Georgia, Western Carolina University, and Florida State in Athens, Ga. Â
UConn comes into the new season after a solid 2022 season. The Huskies ended last season with a 17-14 overall record and a 10-8 BIG EAST record finishing fifth in the conference standings. UConn made it to the BIG EAST semifinals after pulling out a five-set win over St. John's in the quarterfinals but met the No. 12 nationally seeded Marquette in the semis falling in three sets.Â
This season, the Huskies will bring in an underclassmen-heavy squad after losing seven seniors last season. Four freshmen and two transfers will take on the new season. Â
In the preseason BIG EAST coaches' poll, UConn stands at fifth.Â
Scouting the BulldogsÂ
Heading into the matchup, Georgia faces UConn as fourth-ranked in the preseason SEC coaches' poll. Last season, the Bulldogs finished with a 23-8 overall record and 13-5 in SEC action, placing third in the conference standings. Georgia made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament but fell in three sets to Texas. Outside hitter Kacie Evans and middle blocker Sophie Fischer were selected to the preseason all-conference team. Â

Heading into the matchup, Western Carolina faces UConn as fourth-ranked in the preseason Southern Conference coaches' poll. Last season, the Catamounts ended the 2022 season with a 20-13 overall record and 10-6 in SoCon play, finishing third in the conference standings. Western Carolina reached the quarterfinals at the National Invitational Volleyball Championship but fell short to Southern Mississippi in five sets. Outside hitter Bailey Hartsough and middle blocker Eden Punch were selected to the preseason all-conference team.Â
Scouting the SeminolesÂ
Heading into the matchup, Florida State faces UConn as fourth-ranked in the preseason ACC coaches' poll. Last season, the Seminoles ended last season with a 19-11 overall record and 11-7 in ACC play, finishing fifth in conference standings. Outside hitter Audrey Koenig and middle blocker Khouri Louis were selected to the preseason all-conference team.Â
First serve for the three matches is on Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET against Georgia, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET against Western Carolina, and Sunday at 11 a.m. ET against Florida State. Live stats can be found here.
