Women's Tennis Show Out at Quinnipiac Invite

MANCHESTER, Conn. - The Huskies saw huge success this weekend against Fairfield, Army, and Quinnipiac in the first blind dual invitational tournament of the fall season.
UConn would go 22-8 overall on the weekend as it would showcase the newcomers making their presence known in the lineup. Victoria Matos, Isabella Asenov, Caroline Hinshaw, and Varsha Rathore would all come away with wins from the three-day invitational.
"This was a great opening tournament for our team," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. "We played three very good teams this weekend and went 22-8 in all our matches. It was great to see them play and compete. The entire squad really showed our depth and potential this weekend, and I am looking forward to seeing them play in our home tourney next weekend."
In the first match on Friday, UConn swept Fairfield in all six singles matches in the starting lineup. Additionally, all six singles players won in straight sets. Olivia Wright pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 first singles win. Also, first year Caroline Hinshaw and Victoria Matos cruised to a victory as Hinshaw won 6-0,6-1 at fourth singles and Matos took a 6-1, 6-0 win at fifth singles. Aleksandra Karamyshev also eased to a 6-1,6-1 win at third singles.
In doubles play, Maria Constantinou and Matos would take a confident 6-2 win at second doubles.
On Saturday in the second match, UConn split with Army in singles play as eight players would line up for the day. Leading the way in singles was Olivia Wright at the first singles position as she edged out a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win. Helping out the Huskies for a two-match singles win streak were Maria Constantinou at second singles (6-4, 6-4), and Victoria Matos at fifth (6-1, 6-1).
In doubles play, UConn locked in a win at second doubles from Isabel Petri Bere and Varsha Rathore going 7-5.
On the final day of the Quinnipiac Invite, the Huskies would keep the wins coming as they would take seven of the eight singles wins against Quinnipiac. Matos, Wright, and Constantinou finished undefeated in singles play, including three-set wins from Constantinou (3-6, 6-4, 10-8) and Matos (2-6, 6-4, 10-4).
In doubles play, UConn would sweep all four doubles positions behind Karamyshev's and her partner, Asenov's huge 6-1 win at third doubles.
