Huskies Win 5 Set Thriller Over Binghamton

STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team took down Binghamton University in a five set thriller Saturday night. Emma Werkmeister and Cera Powell led the Huskies on the offensive side of the ball combining for 34 kills.
It was an offensive show Saturday night at the UConn Volleyball Center as UConn and Binghamton combined for 108 kills.
In the first set UConn and Binghamton battled point for point with neither team being able to pull ahead and close out the set. The first set was a game of runs, with the Huskies scoring three in a row followed by a Binghamton answer to tie it and eventually take the lead. With both teams trading points throughout the set, the first set would go past the typical 25 point threshold with neither team able to win by two points. Binghamton eventually found a way and took home the first set by a final of 28-26.
The second set mirrored the first with both teams battling out and trading points throughout the set. The Huskies led by grad student Cera Powell eventually found a way to take the lead late and did not look back as they went on to win the second set by a final of 25-23. Emma Werkmeister joined Cera Powell on the offensive attack, helping the Huskies close out the set.
Binghamton would respond in a dominant fashion following the set two loss as they took home the third set by a final of 25-15. UConn had no answer for the Binghamton attack. Set four would follow the same fashion as set three however this time in favor of the Huskies. UConn jumped out to the early lead due to Emma Werkmeister and Cera Powell dominating on the offensive end, and from there the Huskies did not look back. UConn would go on to win the fourth set by a final of 25-18 to force a decisive game five. Through four sets, Cera Powell had 16 kills followed by Emma Werkmeister with 14.
In set five, UConn jumped out to an early lead after winning the serve on the coin flip. Binghamton did not stay silent for long as they fought back and cut the UConn lead to one, putting pressure on the Huskies to respond. UConn answered the call and took a three point lead forcing a Binghamton timeout and from there the Huskies did not look back, taking the fifth set by a final of 15-6.
UConn will wrap up the Dog Pound Challenge Sunday September 17 as they take on Brown at 4pm on UConn+.
