STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team fell to Brown in three sets in the final match of the Dog Pound Challenge Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Emma Werkmeister once again led the way for the Huskies finishing with 12 kills.
The first set began and Brown was firing on all cylinders. The Huskies were keeping plays alive with their defense, but the powerful Brown attack found the open spot on the floor consistently. UConn tried to fight back in by feeding Emma Werkmeister and Cera Powell but the Bears defense rotated cleanly and kept the play alive. UConn eventually began to find a rhythm late in the first set as they relied on their defense and fed Emma Werkmeister and My Ayro to begin chipping away at the brown lead. Brown eventually weathered the UConn comeback and went on to take the first set by a final of 25-17.
Set two followed a similar trend as Brown jumped out to an early lead however this time their defense led the way. UConn once again looked to Emma Werkmeister to get the Huskies back on track but timely blocks from the Bears defense ended hope of a UConn run. UConn made a run midway through the second set, cutting the Brown lead to four thanks to Taylor Pannell defense and Emma Werkmeister offense. After trading points back and forth a Brown run would put the Bears right out of reach for the Huskies and take the second set by a final of 25-16.
Despite dropping the first two sets, UConn did not go away without a fight. The Huskies started the third set by jumping out to an 4-1 lead behind a strong performance from Carly Furlong. The Bears eventually found their stride and went on a 4-0 scoring run to take the lead from the Huskies. UConn continued to fight, not letting the Bears build more than a four point lead. Brown would pull away late in set three and take the set by a final of 25-18 and take the match in three sets.
