Huskies Fall to Marquette in BIG EAST Home Opener

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team fell to Marquette in four sets in the first BIG EAST Conference home match of the season at the UConn Volleyball Center Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies (5-10 OVR, 0-3 Conf.) began with strong play, winning the opening set. Then, the Golden Eagles would storm back to take the next three sets in the match as they improved to 7-7 overall and 3-0 in BIG EAST action. UConn's Cera Powell finished with 13 kills and Emma Werkmeister finished with 12. Doga Kutlu also posted 31 assists and 15 digs.Â
In the first set, UConn had all control in the offense. The Huskies would open the set the same way they finished with a string of effective offensive plays. In the middle of the set, UConn would force Marquette to take a timeout as the Huskies led 10-5 after a Taylor Pannell kill. Emma Werkmeister and Cera Powell combined for nine kills at the end of the set. UConn would take the first set, 25-19.Â
The Huskies would see their offensive plays be stopped in the second set by the strong counterattack from the Golden Eagles. Marquette would force UConn to take a timeout as the Golden Eagles led 10-6. Marquette contributed four of her 13 total kills in the second and would help lead Marquette to a 25-11 set win to tie the set score at one apiece.Â
In the third set, the Golden Eagles would keep much of the same offensive power that they did in the second. The Huskies would keep it close early in the set and staying within four points at the middle of the set down 12-8, but the Golden Eagles would slip away from the Huskies. Although the tough fight with Werkmeister and Powell contributing five kills in the set, the Golden Eagles would close out the set 25-13. Â
The Huskies would hang close in the fourth set holding an 8-4 lead at the Marquette timeout, but the lead would get wiped out as Marquette would go on two 4-0 scoring runs. Werkmeister would add four more kills to her total along with one of her three total blocks on the night. Audrey Rome also put up three blocks with one in the fourth set. The Huskies would go on a run late in the set to keep within two at 24-22 during a 3-0 scoring run. However, the Golden Eagles would hold strong and take the final set 25-22.Â
