Huskies Win in Straight Sets Against Sacred Heart at Home

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team won in three sets against Sacred Heart Thursday night at home. Â
With the win, the Huskies are 3-4 overall in the season. UConn held close with Sacred Heart in set two and three but would eventually pull through to secure the second home victory of the season at the new UConn Volleyball Center formally known as Freitas Ice Forum. Â
In the first set, UConn went on a 4-0 scoring run in the middle of the set to take a 12-8 lead. The Huskies would force the Sacred Heart Pioneers to take a timeout at 19-14 after Mya Ayro posted a third kill of the set. UConn would carry on with a steady lead and Jess Perry would end the set just how it started knocking down a kill and helping UConn take the first set 25-18.Â
UConn would get off to a slow start in the second set as Sacred Heart would start out on a 4-0 scoring run. Then, the Huskies would slowly creep up to the Pioneers in the middle of the set as UConn would trail by just one at 10-9 as Cera Powell's would add one of her five kills on the night. Soon after, UConn would heat up going on a 4-0 scoring run as Emma Werkmeister would add one of her 10 kills on the night and put up a team high. Taylor Pannell would also get going in the second set as she would put up three kills and two blocks in the set. At 25 apiece, Werkmeister, Audrey Rome, and Doga Kutlu would all contribute with kills of their own while Pannell closed the second set with a block, and took a 29-27 set win.Â
In the third set, the Huskies would get off to a similar start as the second, as they would trail 3-0 to start off the set. However, Werkmeister and Powell would continue to add aggressive play offensively. Ayva Cebollero would even it up for UConn at 12 apiece with her lone kill of the night. At UConn's timeout trailing 18-14, Perry would respond for the Huskies putting down a kill along with Rome's aggressive plays defensively putting up two blocks in the set. Rome would help the Huskies edge out the Pioneers on her six total blocks and six kills. UConn would go on to take the third set, 25-23.Â

The Huskies will take on Rhode Island and Yale this weekend at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, Conn. UConn plays Rhode Island at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 8 and Yale at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 9. Â
