Huskies Best Fairfield at Home

MANCHESTER, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team eased their way to a 6-1 win over Fairfield at their home indoor courts at Magic Lincer Tennis Club Wednesday afternoon.
The Huskies are now 2-0 at home and 2-0 overall in the early part of the spring season. Junior Olivia Wright went 2-0 today as well as being undefeated so far this season. Wright paired up with freshman Victoria Matos at first doubles for the easy 6-2 victory. Then, earned herself a straight set win at first singles going 6-0, 7-5. Junior Maria Constantinou at the second singles position is also 4-0 this season in both singles and doubles this season. In doubles, Constantinou teamed up with senior Nansi Toskova for a 6-4 win. Constantinou also won in straight sets at second singles for a 6-2, 6-0 triumph.
"This was a nice win over a very good Fairfield team today," said head coach Glenn Marshall. "We started out with solid doubles play on all 3 courts. The team has been working hard on many different areas of our doubles games, and we executed well in those areas today. In singles we came out strong with the momentum and took the first set on 5 of 6 courts. Then, we had some challenges and adversity in some of our sets, but really hung tough in those situations. I was pleased with our focus and effort to regain our composure and come through in many of those situations. Overall, a very good day as we played well in many of the areas, we worked on in practice this past week.
In doubles play, Wright and Matos received the first win of the match. Then to clinch the doubles point, junior Isabel Petri Bere and freshman Caroline Hinshaw secured a 6-3 win.
Soon after in singles play, the Huskies carried over much of what was displayed in doubles and got right to business. Hinshaw at fifth singles went 2-0 on the day and 4-0 this season easing her way to a 6-0, 6-2 win. Then, Constantinou got UConn its third point of the match and to clinch the match for the Huskies for the second time this season would be Isabella Asenov cruising to a 6-4, 6-2 result.

The Huskies look ahead to a two-match weekend in West Point, N.Y., facing St. Bonaventure on Friday at 5 p.m. ET and Army West Point on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET.
