NEW YORK – For the third time this season, UConn men's basketball rookie Stephon Castle (Covington, Ga.) has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Monday (Jan. 8). The honor for Castle comes after averaging 14.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in a 2-0 week for the Huskies.
Also garnering weekly honors from the BIG EAST is redshirt-sophomore Alex Karaban (Southborough, Mass.), picking up his third Weekly Honor Roll nod of the season. Karaban averaged 18.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in wins over DePaul and Butler.
Castle opened his week strong against DePaul on Jan. 2, stuffing the stat sheet with 14 points, seven assists and four rebounds. He followed that up in a tough road win at Butler by flirting with his first career double-double, scoring 14 again and grabbing nine rebounds along with four assists. Overall for the week Castle shot 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) from the floor and added three steals.
Castle, Karaban and the Huskies return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 10 with an 8:30 p.m. road tilt at Xavier.
