SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - UConn men's basketball redshirt-sophomore Alex Karaban has been named a Top 10 candidate for the 2024 Karl Malone Award, as announced by the Naismith Hall of Fame on Thursday (Feb. 1). The annual honor, now in its 10th  year, recognizes the top power forward in Division I men's college basketball.
Karaban is in the midst of a superb sophomore season, averaging 14.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game. He is shooting 52.3 percent from the floor and 39.3 percent from 3-point range, while connecting at the free throw line at a sterling 89.2 percent clip.
The Southborough, Mass. native has recorded four games of at least 20 points this season, hitting his career-high of 26 on two occasions – most recently against Georgetown on Jan. 14. Signature performances include a 20-point effort in the Empire Classic title game against No. 15 Texas and an 18-point, 9-rebound performance in the Jimmy V Classic against No. 9 North Carolina.
Karaban is the second Husky named to a 'Naismith Starting Five' Top 10 candidate list after Tristen Newton earned a spot on the Bob Cousy Award list earlier this week.
