RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UConn baseball team (5-10) lost its series opener at California Baptist, 8-1, on Friday night at James Totman Stadium.
The game was delayed 2 hours and 23 minutes before the game began under a steady rain.Â
The Huskies jumped on the board first after Korey Morton and Matt Garbowski hit back-to-back singles to open the second. Third baseman Bryan Padilla followed with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 1-0.Â
That is all the offense would muster as the Huskies finished the night with just four hits. UConn threatened in the seventh inning with back-to-back singles from Garbowski and Padilla but a strikeout looking, foul out and strikeout ended the rally for the Huskies.
Gabe Van Emon made the start on the mound and tossed five strong innings of work. The lefthander posted a season-high nine strikeouts on the evening.Â
Tommy Ellisen came out of the pen and fired two shutout innings with no hits and struck out three.Â
UConn looks to even the series on Saturday with a 8:05 p.m. ET / 5:05 p.m. PT first pitch.
