ATLANTA – UConn men's basketball head coach Dan Hurley has been named a finalist for the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Hurley is seeking to become the first UConn head coach to win the prestigious national honor.
Hurley has taken a Husky squad that lost five of its top eight rotation pieces from last year's national championship squad and raised the level, currently sitting at 33-3 on the year and in the Sweet 16 for the second-straight season. The Huskies won a program-record 28 games in the regular season and set a BIG EAST record with 18 conference wins. They also tied a conference-record with a 14-game winning streak in league play and a +13.9 scoring margin.
The Huskies are one win shy of the program record for wins in a season, set in the 1998-99 title campaign. Under Hurley's tutelage, graduate guard Tristen Newton became the seventh consensus First Team All-American in program history this year.
UConn is back in action in the Sweet 16 on Thursday, March 28 with a title game rematch against San Diego State.
