NEW YORK - UConn men's basketball freshman Stephon Castle (Covington, Ga.) has tied a BIG EAST record with his 10th Freshman of the Week nod, as announced by the conference on Monday (March 4). In addition, Donovan Clingan (Bristol, Conn.) earned a spot on the conference's weekly honor roll for the third time this season.
Castle's 10th weekly honor ties him with Carmelo Anthony, who set the record for Syracuse in the 2002-03 season. The freshman shined in UConn's lone game of the week on Sunday, tying his career-high with 21 points in a 91-61 win over Seton Hall. He added four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win and shot 9-of-12 from the field. Overall this season Castle is averaging 11.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game - all tops amongst BIG EAST rookies.
The honor roll nod for Clingan comes after the 7-2 sophomore posted his third double-double of the season against Seton Hall, finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the 30-point win. He also tied his career-high with five blocks and dished out a pair of assists.
Castle, Clingan and the Huskies return to action on Wednesday with a trip to Milwaukee to take on No. 5 Marquette.
