No. 9 UConn to Open BIG EAST Tournament vs. Providence

STORRS, Conn. – The ninth-ranked and No. 1-seeded UConn women's basketball team (26-5) faces No. 9-seed Providence (13-19) in the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals Saturday at noon in Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The game will air on FS1 and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield (FOX Sports 97-9).
UConn won the 2023-24 BIG EAST regular season championship. The Huskies have won 30 regular season conference titles, including 23 as members of the BIG EAST. UConn went undefeated in regular season conference play for the 18th time in program history and 11th time as a member of the BIG EAST.
The Huskies have won 10 straight conference tournament titles.
UConn took home numerous BIG EAST end-of-season honors. Redshirt junior Paige Bueckers was named the conference's Player of the Year, becoming the eighth player in league history to win multiple times. She also earned BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. After earning five Freshman of the Week honors this season, Ashlynn Shade was selected as Freshman of the Year. For the 18th time in his career, Geno Auriemma was named conference Coach of the Year.
Bueckers and senior Aaliyah Edwards were unanimously selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team and senior Nika Mühl earned Second Team honors. Shade and KK Arnold were both unanimously named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
The Huskies are 47-21 all-time vs. the Friars. UConn has won the last 35 meetings between the teams. The teams met just last Saturday to close the regular season. The Huskies won, 65-42, led by 17 points from Paige Bueckers. UConn alumna Kaili McLaren '10 is an assistant coach for the Friars.
Providence beat No. 8-seed Butler, 75-60, in the BIG EAST Tournament first round. The Friars went 10-for-15 from three-point range in the game. This season, Olivia Olsen leads the Friars with 14.0 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Head coach Erin Batth is in her first season at Providence.
