NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The UConn women's lacrosse team (1-4) were defeated by the Yale Bulldogs in New Haven on Saturday afternoon. The loss comes after two consecutive wins over the Bulldogs the past two seasons.
Yale struck first on a cloudy afternoon in New Haven, Conn. as the Bulldogs put the pressure on hard in the first quarter. Veteran goalkeeper, Landyn White, notched eight saves, including two on free position attempts, and gave up two goals to the Bulldogs. Kate Shaffer notched UConn their first goal of the game on a free position shot to cut the lead as the first period ended.
The Huskies tied the game up quickly into the second quarter after a shot from Susan Lafountain snuck past the Yale goalie. The Bulldogs then went back-to-back to give themselves another two-goal lead. That lead was quickly squashed by Rayea Davis as she went back-to-back to notch her first, and only, two of the day, tying up the game. Yale took the lead once again, but that didn't last long as Jenna Giardina scored the equalizer. The Bulldogs scored two more as the time ticked down in the second quarter.
Yale opened the third quarter with two more goals as they took their largest lead of the afternoon. A goal from senior, Lauren Barry, halted the Yale offense and cut the lead to three with less than nine to go in the quarter. The Bulldogs extended their lead once again as they notched another three past White, making the score 12-6, as the period ended.
The Bulldogs struck three times to start the fourth quarter, extending their lead further, and forcing a running clock. Yale scored a fifth in a row, as the Huskies took a timeout. The game was scoreless after the UConn timeout, making the final 17-6, with the Huskies scoring only once in the final 30 minutes.
Landyn White had six free position saves in the loss, and 15 total on the day as the Huskies were outshot 46-19. Davis had two goals, one assist, one ground ball, and one draw control in the loss. Shaffer had one goal and three draw controls, while Giardina had one goal, one assist, and two ground balls. On defense, Megan Whitley had two ground balls and one caused turnover, while Abby Beran recorded one ground ball and one caused turnover.
The Huskies will head back to Storrs to start their three-game home stand with their home-opener against Hofstra University on Tuesday, March 12th. The game is slated for 3:00pm at Morrone Stadium.
