Top Seeded HookC Embarks on BIG EAST Tournament

MASON, Ohio -The top-seeded UConn baseball team (32-21, 17-4 BIG EAST) begins the postseason with the BIG EAST Championship on Wednesday, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. against fourth-seeded Xavier. The game can be viewed on the BIG EAST Digital Network or heard on MIXLR or Fox Sports Radio 97.9 FM.
The BIG EAST Championship is a four-team, double elimination format with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. St. John's is the No. 2 seed and Georgetown is the No. 3 seed in the bracket.Â
UConn earned the No. 1 seed by winning its fourth-straight BIG EAST regular season championship by winning a record 17 games in the 21-game format.Â
Since returning back to the BIG EAST in 2021, the Huskies are 9-3 in the BIG EAST Championship with two BIG EAST Tournament titles in three seasons. UConn has played the most games against Xavier with a 4-3 mark against the Musketeers and both teams facing off in the BIG EAST Championship game (s) in all three seasons.
On Tuesday, the BIG EAST announced the major award winners and All-Conference first and second teams. UConn registed a league-high eight players to the All-BIG EAST teams with Ian Cooke, Brady Afthim, Korey Morton and Luke Broaadhurst being selected for the first team.
Matt Garbowski, Garrett Coe, Maddix Dalena and Bryan Padilla all earned second tea accolades.
RHP Ian Cooke was also voted the 2024 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year. The New Milford, Conn. native went 3-0 in BIG EAST play in seven appearance and five starts. The RHP posted a 2.70 ERA in 43.1 innings and struck out 61 and held opponents to a .205 batting average against.
Cooke is the first Conference Pitcher of the Year for UConn since Anthony Kay won the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2016.Â
