Huskies Secure Senior Night Win Over Butler

STORRS, Conn. — UConn women's volleyball (18-7, 7-6 Big East) prevailed over Butler (12-14, 5-8 Big East) in a four-set match on Friday evening at UConn Volleyball Center, winning 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 27-25.
The first set began with a balanced exchange, both teams capitalizing on opportunities and errors. UConn maintained a slight edge early, with Emma Werkmeister and Audrey Rome securing kills to give the home team a 2-0 lead. Butler responded with a kill from Alaleh Tolliver to level the score at 2-2. As the set progressed, UConn's Hanna Tylska found success with several kills, helping the Huskies establish an 18-16 lead. Butler fought back, tying the set at 22-22 with a kill from Kaylee Finnegan. However, UConn responded on the defensive end, with Jess Perry and Eli Adams combining for a block to clinch the set, 25-23 for the Huskies.
UConn and Butler exchanged points early in the second frame, with Tylska scoring two key kills. Midway through, Butler took advantage of UConn's errors and a service ace by Lauren Evans to level the score at 8-8. UConn briefly regained the lead with a kill from Adams and a combined block from Werkmeister and Adams, but Butler surged ahead with strong plays from Alaleh Tolliver and Ellery Rees. UConn attempted a comeback with two consecutive aces from Werkmeister, but Elise Ward's consecutive kills sealed the set for Butler at 25-21.
UConn secured a 25-20 victory in the third set against Butler, highlighted by a series of effective plays. Jess Perry contributed four kills, including the opening point, assisted by Emma Werkmeister and Doga Kutlu. Butler's Carly Slusser and Elise Ward kept the visiting team competitive, with Slusser delivering a kill to level the score at 1-1, and Ward adding multiple kills throughout the set. A pivotal moment came when UConn capitalized on Butler's service errors, maintaining a lead following a service ace from McKenna Brand, which brought the score to 23-18. The set concluded on a Butler service error, sealing UConn's advantage.
In the fourth set, UConn secured a narrow 27-25 win over Butler with key contributions from multiple players. Butler initially gained momentum with a series of plays, including a service ace by Sawyer Jones and consecutive kills by Elise Ward, pushing them ahead 5-3. UConn responded with a balanced attack, highlighted by Emma Werkmeister's critical kills and a service ace from Grace Maria that tied the score at 18-18. A pivotal moment came when Eli Adams delivered consecutive blocks against Carly Slusser, turning the tide in UConn's favor. The set concluded with Audrey Rome and Doga Kutlu each contributing crucial kills, with Kutlu sealing the set victory for the Huskies.
Werkmeister posted 14 kills and 14 digs. Doga Kutlu facilitated the offense with 34 assists and bolstered the defense with a team-high 17 digs. Eli Adams was dominant at the net, recording eight total blocks and adding five kills. Jess Perry added 11 kills and two block assists.
Looking ahead, UConn will host Xavier on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. at the UConn Volleyball Center.
