STORRS, Conn. - Â Back in the month of March, student-athletes from the University of Connecticut read aloud to elementary classrooms.
Throughout the month of March, UConn Athletics proudly participated in the BIG EAST Read Across America Initiative, a nationwide effort to inspire young readers and foster community engagement. Members of the women's soccer, women's lacrosse, men's soccer, and women's ice hockey programs visited local schools, including Riverside Magnet School and CREC Reggio Magnet School of the Arts, engaging with students through reading sessions and interactive discussions about the power of literacy.Â
This initiative, led by the National Education Association (NEA)Â and centered around Dr. Seuss' birthday (March 2) encourages schools and communities nationwide to promote reading through events. UConn student-athletes embraced this mission, sharing their passion for academics while reinforcing the importance of education and lifelong learning.
Through read-aloud activities and encouragement for young learners to set reading goals, UConn Athletics demonstrated its commitment to community engagement and literacy advocacy. The initiative provided student-athletes with a unique opportunity to connect with the community, showcasing leadership both on and off the field.
UConn Athletics remains dedicated to using its platform to create meaningful community service and looks forward to continuing initiatives that promote education and community engagement.
