West Point, New York – The UConn women's swimming and diving team finished second to open the season vs. Army, Marist and Central Connecticut State University. The Huskies finished with a final score of 787 points only trailing Army who finished with 1,018 points.
In the first meet of the season, the Huskies had strong swims across the board, led by Jessica Sheng and Sydney Perkins. The Huskies started the meet strong, placing top three in the 400 Medley Relay and the 400 Freestyle relay followed by a second place finish by Rhian Russel in the 50 yard Backstroke.
"Tonight was a great way to start our dual meet season," said head coach Chris Maiello. "With the unique format it allowed us to rediscover our racing skills in a fun and competitive environment. Our expectations were to practice our process, execute our racing details and learn where we can get better. I think we did a good job of that tonight. Swimming against competition that uses tech suits this early in the season is challenging, but our team handled it well and raced hard tonight. It was cool to get a couple event wins as well, with Jessica in the knock-out 50 free against suited competitors was special, she's off to a great start this season. Similarly, Sydney picked up a nice win in the 150 Breaststroke, her time in that event compares well to previous seasons. Overall, a good start to the competition year."
UConn will now turn their attention to dual meets as the Huskies will welcome BIG EAST rival Villanova to Storrs on October 18.
