Huskies Open the Weekend With Pair of Wins

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UConn softball team opened the Lowcountry Classic with a pair of wins on Friday at the CSU Softball Complex. The Huskies move to 2-4 overall this season.
Game One
Freshman Caprice Bohmer (Ashburn, Va.) got the ball in game one, making her third start of the season for the Huskies. Bohmer was sensational, tossing her first career complete game, giving up two runs on just a pair of hits, adding a career high 11 strikeouts.
UConn jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning, as senior outfielder Kaitlyn Kibling (LaFayette, N.Y.) dropped a sacrifice bunt squeeze, scoring Cat Petteys (Vestal, N.Y.) from third base.
In the 4th inning, Kibling extended the Huskies lead, with a double to right center field, scoring Petteys from third base.
Bohmer shut down the Zips in the middle innings, holding a no-hitter through six innings. She worked four 1-2-3 innings, striking out the side twice.
UConn added two runs in the 6th inning, making it 4-0. Freshman catcher Alexis Juhl (Waxhaw, N.C.) recorded her first career RBI with a single down the right field line, scoring Petteys from second base. A few batters later, sophomore outfielder Bella Cruz (North Bellmore, N.Y.) knocked in her first career RBI with a single to right field, scoring pinch runner Bella Cefola (Flanders, N.J.) from second base.
UConn put the game out of reach for Akron in the 7th inning, scoring three runs on three hits. The Huskies loaded the bases for senior infielder Savannah Ring (Wyckoff, N.J.) who plated two runs with a single to center field. The next batter, Juhl drove in her second RBI of the game with a single to left field, extending the lead to 7-0.
Akron scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, but Bohmer managed to shut the door on the Zips offense, closing out the first victory of the season for the Huskies.

Game Two
Graduate student Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) made her second start of the season in game two. Walter tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in the circle for the Huskies, giving up just one hit while adding three strikeouts.
UConn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, as junior outfielder Kaitlyn Breslin (Hopkinton, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Ava Calciano (Lewes, Del.) from third base.
UConn took control in the 2nd inning, scoring four runs, all coming with two outs, extending the lead to 5-0. Bella Cruz got the two-out rally started with a single, scoring Kaitlyn Kibling from second base. Two batters later, Cat Petteys delivered a single to right field, scoring Cruz from second base. Kaiea Higa (Maple Valley, Wash.) followed Petteys with a single to center field, scoring Calciano from third base. Breslin capped off the Huskies big inning with another single to center field, scoring Petteys from second base.
Cruz added to the Huskies lead in the 3rd inning with a double down the left field line, scoring Savannah Ring from third base, making it 6-0.
UConn broke the game open in the 4th inning, scoring six runs on six hits. Breslin got it started with a double to left center, scoring Higa all the way from first base. Haley Coupal (North Attleboro, Mass.) followed Breslin with a single to right field, scoring pinch runner Bella Cefola from third base. Cruz kept the rally going with a single, scoring Coupal from third base. Calciano puts the Huskies in double digits with a ground out to third base, scoring Savannah Ring from third base. Petteys followed Calciano with a double to left center, scoring two more runs in the inning.
Sophomore Alexandra Bacher (Ridgefield, Conn.) came on in relief for Walter in the 4th inning, making her fourth appearance of the season. Bacher tossed a scoreless frame in the circle for the Huskies.
In the 5th inning, Breslin hit the Huskies first home run of the 2026 season, a solo shot to left center field, extending the lead to 13-0.
Sophomore Stella Kiemele (St. Anthony, Minn.) came on to close out the win in the circle in the 5th inning, making her second appearance of the season. Kiemele tossed a scoreless inning, earning the UConn pitching staff their first shutout of the season.
