STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (27-22) salvaged the final game of the series against ETSU (29-16), 4-3 on a cold windy afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.
The victory earned 23rd year head coach Jim Penders his 800th career victory as a head coach with all of them coming at his alma mater.
The Huskies were held to just three hits on the day but found a way with a rally in the sixth inning.Â
Chase Taylor led off the frame with a walk and advanced to third on a pinch-hit single from Chris Cancel. The Staten Island, N.Y. native moved up to second on the throw to third to give UConn its best offensive threat of the day. A walk followed to load the bases for sophomore Jackson Marshall.Â
On the first pitch he saw, Marshall smashed his second grand slam of the season and 13th home run overall to flip the scoreline and give UConn a 4-2 lead.
That was all the offense the Huskies would need with Oliver Pudvar (6-3) delivering another quality start with 6.2 innings, allowed three runs to earn his fourth-straight victory.
Evan Hamberger shined out of the pen with a season-best 1.0 inning of shutout ball out of the pen with a season-high two strikeouts.Â
Greg Shaw III followed with 1.1 shutout frames to earn his second save of the year.Â
Next up, the Huskies play their final road series of the year at Seton Hall beginning on Friday, May 8 at 4 p.m.
