Alex Karaban Wins BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award

NEW YORK โย UConn men's basketball legendย Alex Karabanย has been named the 2025-26 winner of the BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award for men's basketball, the conference office announced on Wednesday.ย The Award recognizes academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
The Sport Excellence Awards are presented to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are selected by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Karabanย completed his storied career at UConn following the 2026 National Championship. The two-time national champion starter ended his time in Storrs as the program's all-time leader in wins, games played, games started, minutes logged and 3-pointers made. He is UConn's sixth all-time leading scorer, compiling 1,880 points over 151 career games.ย Karabanย was a three-time All-BIG EAST selection and earned All-Tournament honors at the 2026 Final Four.ย
In the classroom, the Southborough, Mass. native earned an economics degree in 2025 with a 3.39 GPA and completed his non-profit management certificate in 2026 with a 3.92 GPA.ย Karabanย was a four-time BIG EAST All-Academic team pick. In late 2025 was named a finalist for theย Impactful Emerging Leader Award, awarded to an up-and-coming changemaker on the fast track to leadership with a proven record of giving back, by the United Way of Central and Northern Connecticut.
