Ted Hefter joins Head Coach Jim Mora’s coaching staff in 2025 as the team’s Senior Offensive Analyst. Hefter will also work as the Assistant Quarterbacks Coach this season.
Hefter comes to Storrs after spending the 2024 season as the Quarterbacks Coach at his alma mater William & Mary. He handled the team’s base pass game planning, as well as the 3rd down and redzone passing game. Hefter coached QB Darius Wilson to an all-conference season; Wilson finished 2nd in the CAA (Coastal Athletic Association) in total yards and established himself as one of the FCS’s top rushing QB’s with 615 rushing yds and 9 TDs. Hefter also coached Hollis Mathis, a former QB who transitioned to a flex “ATH” position. Mathis led the team in catches (52), receiving yards (602), contributed another 2 TDs passing, and became the 2nd ever player in CFB history to achieve 1000yds of career production as a passer, rusher, and receiver. The 2024 William & Mary offense ranked in the top-10 nationally in 3rd-down offense, red zone TD percentage, rushing yards, explosive runs, rushing touchdowns, and “successful play percentage” (PFF).
Prior to his return to William & Mary, Hefter spent the 2023 season as the Quarterbacks Coach and Pass Game Coordinator at the University of Dayton. In addition to assisting in recruiting efforts he also assisted in academic support for the team. He headed up the base pass game, 3rd down and redzone passing game, and two-minute offense. The team ranked third in the PFL conference in scoring offense and first downs and finished second in third-down offense. Hefter helped mentor another former QB playing WR in his freshman year, Gavin Lochow, who earned an FCS All-American distinction and Jerry Rice Award Finalist for the 2023 season.
He got his collegiate coaching career started as a graduate assistant at Western Michigan in 2021 and 2022. Working under defensive coordinator Lou Esposito, the 2021 WMU defense finished first in the MAC conference in total defense, third down %, first downs allowed, sacks, and passing yds per game. In 2021, he worked with defensive end Ali Fayad, who was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year finishing with 13 sacks and 17 TFLs, as well as future 2nd round NFL Draft pick DT Braden Fiske. The 2021 Western Michigan team finished the 2021 season 8-5 with a dominant win over Nevada in the Quick Lane Bowl, 52-24. After one season as a defensive assistant, Hefter transitioned over to the assistant quarterbacks coach for the 2022 season.
Hefter graduated from William & Mary in 2021 with a degree in business administration. He was the recipient of the William & Mary Cypher Award “for a graduating student with exemplary engagement, leadership, and service to W&M”. As a quarterback for the Tribe football team, Hefter was named a team captain as a senior in 2020. He was the W&M HEYFARL Scholarship recipient in 2020, which is awarded to a walk-on player earning athletic scholarship. Hefter also was named the W&M Scout Team Player of the Year (2018), was on the W&M Football Leadership Council (2019, 2020) and was William & Mary’s Student-Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC) President (2019, 2020).
