James Petrella joined Chris Gbandi's staff in February of 2026.

Petrella previously was the first assistant and goalkeeper coach at Johnson and Wales University from 2024-2026. He also served as head coach for the RI Surf for four seasons from 2022-2026.

Prior to his time at Johnson and Wales, Petrella was an assistant coach for La Salle Academy from 2022-2024.

Petrella graduate from Rhode Island College where he was a four-year starter and two-time team captain for the men's soccer program from 2017-2021. He earned all-academic honors all four years, and was named team MVP in 2021, receiving an invite to the senior all-star game.

Petrella earned his bachelor's degree in Secondary Education Mathematics from Rhode Island College in 2021. He recently acquired a master's degree in School Counseling from Providence College in 2026.

Petrella is a native of Willington, Connecticut. He attended EO Smith High School and Worcester Academy. He currently holds a USSF Grassroots 9v9, 11v11, and D License.
