Kevin Freeman is in his first season as an assistant coach at UConn, returning to his alma mater and joining Dan Hurley’s staff in September, 2020. It is Freeman’s second stint on the coaching staff at UConn, having spent one year as the assistant director and then six years as the director of basketball administration from 2011-2018.
Freeman spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Penn State University, gaining recruiting experience and working primarily with the Nittany Lions’ big men as he helped the team post a 21-10 record before the global pandemic stopped the 2019-20 season.
Previous to his coaching position at Penn State, Freeman was on the basketball staff at UConn, joining the staff of Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun as the assistant director of basketball administration in 2011-12 and taking over as the director of basketball administration for the next six years under Coach Kevin Ollie, which included the NCAA National Championship in 2014 and the American Athletic Conference title in 2016. As the director of basketball administration, Freeman was not only in charge of the massive day-to-day operation of the program, but the coordinator for all the Huskies’ travel and their practice schedules at home and on the road. He served as the liaison between the men’s program and university administration, including all compliance issues, as well as the campus community.
Freeman’s administrative position at UConn came after a well-traveled 11-year professional basketball career that included stops in Italy, Australia, Greece, South Korea, China, Puerto Rico, Spain and Venezuela.
The Springfield, Mass., native was an all-state performer at Patterson (N.J.) Catholic High before his stellar four-year career at UConn. He still ranks second all-time at UConn in games played (140), 21st in points scored (1,476) and 8th in total rebounds (913). He is one of only four players in UConn history with at least 1,400 points and 900 rebounds.
Playing under Calhoun, Freeman was named the Most Outstanding Player as he led UConn to the 1999 Big East Tournament Championship and was selected to the 1999 NCAA West Regional All-Tournament Team as an invaluable starter on UConn’s first NCAA National Championship team. During his four-year career, the Huskies compiled an impressive 109-32 record with two Big East regular-season championships, two Big East Tournament championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances. He was named to the UConn All-Century Team by fan vote in 2001.
Freeman, 42, and wife Nicole are the parents of a daughter, Kekoa, and two sons, Sire and Legend.
