Huskies tied for 10th at Adams Cup

NEWPORT, RI (October 2) – The University of Connecticut men’s golf team was in action at the 2001 Adams Cup of Newport Intercollegiate Golf Tournament on Tuesday as it traveled to Newport, RI, and combined for a score of 586, which has the squad tied for tenth place with Brigham Young following day one. The University of New Mexico leads the field of 17 at 561, while Minnesota (571), Vanderbilt (574) and host Rhode Island (576) round out the top four.
Pacing the Huskies was freshman Mike Murphy (Woburn, MA), who carded scores of 71 and 73 and is tied with four others for 16th place with a 144 (+4). Senior Sean Vigue (Lebanon, CT) lowered his first round score of 76 to a 71 in the second round and is in a seven-way tie for 31st with a seven-over-par 147. Senior Kevin O’Connor (East Lyme, CT) fired back-to-back rounds of 74 (+8) and is tied for 38th, while senior Kevin Coghlan (North Ridge, CA) strung together rounds of 77 and 74 and stands 53rd with eight others at 151 (+11). Freshman Daniel Keefe (Cumberland, RI) rounded out the UConn effort with a first round 73 but followed it up with an 84 to fall to 77th with a 157 (+17).
Rhode Island’s Mike Carbone, Vanderbilt’s Mark Donnell and New Mexico’s Wil Collins are all tied for the lead after the first day with scores of 137 (-3). Carbone shot the best round of the day his second time through the course, carding a 66 (-4).
After playing the first 36 holes on Tuesday, the Adams Cup Tournament will conclude tomorrow with a round of 18 at the Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett, RI.
The Huskies will next take to the links in New Haven, CT for the Yale Invitational which was rescheduled for October 13-14. A season ago at this tournament, UConn finished fifth in a 21-team field with a three-round total of 912.
