MORGANTOWN, WV (October 5) — David Castellanos (Sr., Philadelphia, PA) had two goals and Damani Ralph (Jr., Meridian), MS) added one of his own along with two assists to lead the University of Connecticut men’s soccer team to its third shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over West Virginia Friday night in Morgantown, WV. With the win, UConn is now 6-2-2 on the season and 3-0-0 in BIG EAST play, while WVU fell to 3-6-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the league.
Castellanos and Ralph hooked up for the first goal at the 18:03 mark when Ralph sent the ball up field and Castellanos received it in front of the defense then sent it into the lower right corner of the net.
Minutes later (27:24), Ralph would tally one of his own when Lindon Pecorelli (So., LaCrescenta, CA) passed into the box and Castellanos deflected it towards the right side off of his foot where Ralph was standing to make it 2-0 with his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Castellanos got his second goal of the night when Ralph passed it just inside the left side of the box and Castellanos sent it past Mountaineer goal keeper Chris McKinney, who had come out to defend the shot.
McKinney ended the night with two saves, as did Bryheem Hancock (Sr., Middletown, DE) for the Huskies.
On Wednesday, October 10, the Huskies will return home to Storrs, CT, for a 7 p.m. match up against Boston College. The Huskies lead the series 24-5-4, and have not been beaten by the Eagles in the last five meetings dating back to a 2-1 loss on November 10, 1995 at the BIG EAST Tournament.
