Women's Basketball Cruises Past Rhode Island Rams, 84-38

HARTFORD, CT (Nov. 24, 2001) -- Led by 17 points from senior Asjha Jones (Piscataway, NJ), the No. 1 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team rolled over Rhode Island, 84-38, in its first contest of the season at the Hartford Civic Center. UConn is now a perfect 5-0 to begin the season, while Rhode Island falls to 2-1.
The Huskies began the game with a 10-3 run, but Rhode Island kept the lead within 11 points until the 9:22 mark in the half. UConn then posted a 16-3 run, making the halftime advantage 43-19.
Jones scored 12 of her game-high 17 points in the first half. She also became the 21st player in UConn history to score 1,000 or more career points on a layup with 8:55 left in the half.
UConn picked up where it left off in the second half, recording a 17-0 run to begin the half. Rhode Island finally responded with a three-pointer by Hilary Goodrich with 13:47 left in the game, but the Husky damage had already been done. Connecticut cruised to the 46-point victory with 10 players seeing action.
Senior Swin Cash (McKeesport, PA) posted her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Sue Bird (Syosset, NY) rounded out the Husky double-digit scorers, registering 10 points, six assists and five steals. Redshirt freshman Ashley Battle (Pittsburgh, PA) also had an impressive outing with a career-high nine points and 13 rebounds.
Goodrich led the Rams with 14 points on four three-pointers. Yatar Kuyateh also recorded nine points and four rebounds.
UConn returns to action this Monday, Nov. 26, when it travels to Winston-Salem, NC, for its first road contest of the season. The Huskies will face ACC foe Wake Forest in a 7 p.m. matchup.
