UCONN’S CARON BUTLER SCORES 12
IN USA EXHIBITION WIN OVER LITHUANIA
DALLAS, TEXAS—University of Connecticut basketball standout
Caron Butler (Racine, Wisconsin) scored 12 points to help lead the
USA World Championship For Young Men Team to an easy 113-66
exhibition win over Lithuania Wednesday night at Southern Methodist University’s Moody Coliseum.
All 13 USA team members hit the scoring column as the United
States team took part in the first of two exhibition contests in
preparation for the upcoming World Championship Tournament.
Butler, who led UConn in both scoring and rebounding during his first
collegiate season in 2000-2001, totaled his 12 points on six-of-12
from the field for the USA team and he also added five rebounds
(four offensive) and two assists.
Troy Bell of Boston College and Carlos Boozer of Duke each had 13
points to lead the USA scorers. Also in double figures were Duke’s
Dahntay Jones and Maurice Taylor of Michigan State with 10 point
apiece.
The United States will play a second exhibition on Thursday evening
against Yugoslavia’s 22-year-old and under national team.
A total of 13 finalists are currently training in Dallas for the 2001
FIBA World Championship For Young Men that will be played Aug. 3-
12 in Saitama, Japan. The official 12-man U.S. team is expected to be announced on Friday (July 27). The USA squad will then conclude its domestic training July 27-30 in Oakland, California.
