STORRS, CT (August 31, 2001) – The University of Connecticut Women’s Volleyball team opened the 2001 season with a victory over Massachusetts in the second game of the IKON Husky Classic on Friday, August 31.
Junior outside hitter Melissa Wooley (Ridgecrest, CA), the 2000 IKON Husky Classic MVP, registered a double-double for the Huskies with 16 kills and 10 digs and recorded a blistering .314 hitting percentage. Junior Christine Lambert (Lancaster, CA) notched 11 kills for a hitting percentage of .320, while sophomore Laura Wooley (Ridgecrest, CA) added 12 kills. Husky senior setter Maria Shaker (Fairview Park, OH) also had a double-double, posting 40 assists and 15 digs.
The Huskies dominated UMass in hitting percentage each game of the match but the Minutewomen never allowed the Huskies to blow any of the three games open, as the squad rallied behind the play of sophomore Nitia Small (Los Angeles, CA), senior Lymarie Llovet (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) and senior Lauren Vander Veen (Oakland, CA), each of whom recorded 7 kills.
The match was the first for both Connecticut and Massachusetts this season. In the first game of the IKON Husky Classic, New Hampshire defeated Texas Christian, 3-1. Play resumes tonight as New Hampshire faces California in a 5 p.m. matchup and UConn squares off against Texas Christian at 7 p.m. The Classic runs through Sunday. All matches are in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
