Huskies Down UMass, 5-2

STORRS, CT (Oct. 2, 2002) - The University of Connecticut women’s tennis team won a hard fought dual, Wednesday, 5-2 over UMass at the UConn Tennis Courts. UConn with the win moves to 3-0, in dual play this fall.
The Huskies scored the first point, taking two of three doubles matches. Connecticut then struggled early in singles as UMass tightened the score at 3-2 and already owning first set victories in the two matches remaining. UConn forced both matches to three sets and ultimately won them for the 5-2 victory.
The Huskies were led by the team of senior Trinell Russel (Voorheesville, NY) and sophomore Barbara Schumsky (West Hartford, CT) who teamed together to win the No. 1 doubles match. Russel and Schumsky then won their matches at No. 2 and No. 4 singles respectively in three sets. Senior Colleen Connors (Ormond Beach, FL) also played well winning her singles match at No. 6 singles and teaming with senior April Dixon (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) to win at No. 2 doubles.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 9, when they host Holy Cross at 3:30 pm, at the UConn Tennis Courts.
