STORRS, CT (Oct. 25) - Senior Melissa Wooley’s (Ridgecrest, CA) match high 16 kills helped the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team defeat Villanova, 3-0, Fri., Oct. 25, at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. The win moves the Huskies to 9-12 overall and 4-2 in the BIG EAST, while Villanova falls to 11-15 overall and 1-6 in the conference
Game one saw Villanova jump out to an early 7-2 lead, but UConn fought back and tied it at 15-15. The Huskies then pushed for a 26-22 lead and held on for the 30-24 victory in game one. Connecticut was led in game one by Wooley with six kills and five digs.
UConn jumped out early in game two for a 4-2 and then 18-13 lead. The Wildcats fought their way back and tied it at 19-19. The Huskies took control from their with a big push to 28-20 and finished them off from there at 30-25. Senior Christine Lambert (Lancaster, CA) recorded four kills on an .800 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks, while senior Sarah Walton (North Fork, CA) helped defensively with seven digs.
In game three the game was back and forth all the way to the end. Villanova led 28-26, but UConn pushed four straight points to close out the match at 30-28. The Huskies were led by Wooley’s and sophomore Jamie Hadenfeldt’s (Benicia, CA) six kills each.
Walton finished the match with a kill-dig double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs, while Lambert had nine kills on a .348 hitting percentage and a match high nine blocks. Junior Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA) set the game with 45 assists to go along with a match high 14 digs.
Villanova was led by Kerri Sullivan with 14 kills and Celine Nguyen with 14 digs.
Connecticut returns to action on Sun., Oct. 27, at 2:00 pm, when they play host to BIG EAST rival Georgetown.
