STORRS, CT (Oct. 4) – Behind a hat trick from Kristen Graczyk (Albuquerque, NM), the University of Connecticut women’s soccer team shut out the University of Miami, 5-0, at Morrone Stadium on Friday evening. The BIG EAST Northeast Division win put the Huskies at 4-0-0 in the league, the only team left with an undefeated record, and 9-1-1 overall. Miami fell to 7-4-1 overall, 3-1-1 in the BIG EAST Northeast Division.
The Huskies dominated the first half behind the tireless play of Graczyk. She recorded nine shots in the first half and put two past Hurricane goalkeeper Rachel Elsby in the first four minutes of play. Graczyk’s first goal came just 3:28 into play. Teammate Jennifer Sullivan (Stonington, CT) placed a corner kick in the box and Graczyk, with her back to the goal spun around and headed it in. A mere 20 seconds later, Graczyk scored unassisted as her shot lobbed over Elsby’s head.
Graczyk finished her hat-trick with a second unassisted tally at the 71:17 mark of the game. She placed another just out of reach of Elsby. UConn scored again just over two minutes later when Sullivan received a crossed pass from Salla Ranta (Helsinki, Finland) and shot it to the left side of the net to continue the shutout. The Huskies’ final goal was scored by rookie Kristine Lundberg (Bardu, Norway).
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, October 6 to match up with non-conference opponent Yale. Game time is 1 p.m. at Morrone Stadium.
