ANNAPOLIS, Md. --- University of Connecticut freshman running back Terry Caulley rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries Saturday afternoon to lift the Huskies to a 38-0 win over Navy Saturday afternoon before a rain-soaked crowd of 25,664 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
UConn improves to 5-6 on the season while Navy falls to 1-9. The Huskies will play for a .500 season next week when they travel to Iowa State for a 2 p.m. Eastern time contest.
Caulley, who entered the game as the nation’s 20th-leading rusher, now has 1,056 rushing yards this season, making him the first UConn freshman to rush for over a 1,000 yards since Tory Taylor who had 1,262 in 1995. Caulley is now the 55th freshman in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards or more in a season. The Navy game marked Caulley’s sixth 100 yard rushing performance of the year, good for second best in school history. The game was UConn’s first shutout since a 19-0 blanking of Eastern Michigan on October, 6 2001. It marks the first time UConn has earned a shutout in consecutive seasons since 1967-68.
UConn quarterback Dan Orlovsky opened the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jason Williams with 9:30 left in the first quarter. The touchdown pass marked Orlovsky’s 11th straight contest with a TD toss. The Huskies’ other first quarter touchdown came on a 17-yard run by Caulley that capped off a six play-80 yard drive that took 2:22.
Orlovsky enjoyed an excellent day as he was 29 of 35 in the air for 272 yards with three touchdowns. The Husky defense limited the Mids to 82 yards on 40 plays. The 82 yards mark UConn’s best outing since holding Yale to 65 yards of total offense in a 20-0 win in 1984. The Huskies were able to gain 509 yards on 84 plays.
The Huskies, who did not punt at all during the first half, scored three times in the second quarter. Marc Hickok connected on a 20-yard field goal 1:29 into the quarter while Orlovsky hooked up with Wes Timko for a six-yard TD pass with 11:06 left in the half. Caulley ended the first half with a three-yard TD run with 1:08 left to play in the stanza.
UConn scored the only points of the third quarter when Tim Lassen caught a two-yard pass from Orlovsky with 7:54 left in the quarter. The fourth quarter was scoreless by both teams.
